Ant Movie Catalog is an open source project started by Antoine Potten back in 2000 and improved by Mickaël Vanneufville since 2011. The Ant Movie Catalog application is here to meet a specific need: the need to manage a large collection of movies. With the help of this application you can create a catalog of all the movies you have in your collection (CDs, DVDs, tapes, and so on).

Getting the Ant Movie Catalog installation file of only 4.3MB will take little of your time. And so will take installing it on your PC; it’s nothing more complicated than running the installation file and following the steps presented by the setup wizard. You will be asked to choose between a full installation (language files, scripts, printing templates and report designer, HTML export templates), compact installation, and custom installation. No matter which one you choose, you will be done in little time.

The Ant Movie Catalog interface is quite easy to figure out. You have the main functions and buttons at the top, a list of movies on the left (for a more visually appealing experience I recommend you to go with the thumbnails instead of the plain text list), and at the right you have a large pane that you can use to enter info on your movies. There is a lot of info you can enter, either manually or automatically via a script. There are plenty of scripts you can choose from, including an IMDb one. Just select the IMDb script, type in the name of a movie, select the movie you want (there will be several movies that match the name you typed), and then let Ant Movie Catalog import that data for you.

If you already have a catalog of your collection, you can import it into Ant Movie Catalog. And if you want to save your catalog, you can export it.

Ant Movie Catalog has a handy loans section that helps you keep track of the movies you loaned to others. And it also has a handy random selection tool that will randomly pick a movie from your collection – that should come in handy when you want to watch a movie but you can’t make up your mind which one you want to watch.

As I’ve already mentioned above, Ant Movie Catalog is free and open source. If you like the application, if you appreciate the functionality it has to offer and you want to support the project, consider making a donation.

With the help of the free and open source Ant Movie Catalog application you can easily and efficiently manage your collection of movies.

Pros

A very simple installation process; you get to choose between three installation methods. A user friendly interface. Get movie information from the web using a script. Keep track of the movies you loaned to others. Random selection tool will randomly pick a movie for you. Support for multiple languages and multiple icon sets is provided. Ant Movie Catalog is free and open source.

Cons

None that I could think of.
